The bad is always followed by the good
At least that is what we are made to believe
But try explaining why good things happen to bad people
When the decent still suffer

When the going gets tough, the tough get going
But not all the tough are good
Like mushrooms after the rain
The poisonous indistinguishable from the edible,

Can we or should we keep ignoring?
The conceit of exceptionalism,
By those wearing masks to hide their true selves

By the politicians, and their lies
By the covert racists, and their bigotry
By the ultra-religious and their discrimination
By the plutocrats and their false benevolence

The lack of empathy
The lack of understanding
The lack of sympathy
The lack of compassion
The indifference
Are all deafening without their masks

The bad is always followed by the good
But only when the good take the lead
